I think I can still see my deltoid!

As most of my readers have already seen on Facebook by now, it happened!  I managed to “send” my 5.12a benchmark climb, “Flat Earth” on Sunday.  I’m officially 32 weeks pregnant and 20 pounds heavier than my usual 100 pounds.  Sunday began a little cool and breezy, but turned out to be perfect.  I had an awesome group of friends, my daughter and husband all cheering me on.  I managed to “send” on my third try, which was good because I get tired pretty quickly these days.  Most importantly, I feel great after climbing it- no pain, no soreness.  I never would have thought I’d be able to climb this hard when I can hardly put my shoes on or get up off the floor!

Outgrowing my maternity clothes!

I wish I had climbed harder and lifted weights more when I was pregnant the first time around.  I really think it’s helped me keep my weight in check and if my labor turns out to be easier, I’m going to be shouting from the rooftops about the benefits of exercise while pregnant!  Now, I wonder what I’ll be able to climb at 9 months pregnant. ;)

Congrats to you! I only imagine trying to TR like 5.8′s in the gym while pregnant, and only for the first few months.. but I assume you’re younger than me and a better climber. ;) I’m wondering which harness you have – the Petzl or the Camp. They both look dreadfully uncomfortable. Would it have killed them to pad the webbing?

I have the Petzl harness. It’s not terrible. Padding would be nice, but really it’s the buckles on the side that cause the most discomfort. You could wrap something around them. I just hang kind of funny to make sure nothing is poking into me- kind of leaning way back and with my legs apart, almost in a sitting position.

I’m 36 (so “advanced maternal age”) and climbed 5.13 prior to becoming pregnant, just to give you an idea of my “baseline”. So, it seems like you can just subtract a number grade from your pre-pregnancy climbing level and stay there up until pretty far along. (Assuming you don’t have any other issues. I have a friend suffering from sciatica who had to stop climbing at 8 months).

You are an inspiration!! I’m stuck in the rock gym up in Seattle right now and am often struggling up 5.9s at 7 months pregnant. But at least I’m still climbing! I’m really enjoying your blog!! Keep it up!! :)
